Know What You Want

This may seem like the obvious thing to do, but surprisingly, it is also the thing most people often forget to do. Knowing what you want. Once you’ve decided what exact services you’re looking for, then is the time to research and call around for the best contractor to fit your needs.

Lawncare vs Landscaping

Most people use lawncare and landscaping interchangeably when in fact they are not. Lawncare refers to lawn maintenance services including grass cutting, weeding, fertilization, etc. Landscaping, on the other hand, covers more specialized services like garden and plant installation, patio installation, fencing, etc.

Insurance and Licensing:

  • Landscaping businesses are required to hold insurance as well as a business license
  • Lawncare companies are not typically required to hold these

Cost:

  • Landscaping companies usually cost a bit more due to their specialized services
  • Some landscaping companies also offer regular lawncare services, but most lawncare companies do not offer landscaping services

Do Your Research

Research, research, research. This can’t be stressed enough. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions and ask for references:

  • Has this company serviced properties similar to yours?
  • What is the full extent of the services they provide?

Reputable companies will gladly answer all of your questions and will also hold multiple memberships to different associations such as Landscape Ontario.

Don’t know where to start?

  • Have a look at the other properties in your area. See a well-manicured property? Ask your neighbor about who does their service
  • You could always search Google for landscaping companies in your area as well

Quality vs Price

Cheaper does not always mean better. While it's understandable to want to save on cost, a cheap price or quote for landscaping work may be a sign of inexperience. And if the work isn’t done right the first time, that means you’ll be paying double later to get that fixed. Seek value over cost. Choose a landscaping company who will bring knowledge and expertise, thus adding value to your property.

Get It in Writing

Once you’ve finally settled on a landscaping company, make sure you get a detailed contract of services in writing. In the contract itself should go over things like pricing, labor costs, payment plans, and so forth. If the company refuses to give you a written contract or if they ask for the full contract payment up front, those are red flags that something is not quite right. Reputable companies will always provide a written contract to you and will never ask for full payment up front.

There are many things to consider when hiring a landscaping company. Properly vetted, however, and that can be one of the best investments you can make for your commercial property. At Mr. Lawnmower, we offer quality services at a competitive price.
